Naturally, the journey nourishes the human being, coaxing from it an openness to new contexts. People are constantly divided between going and stayin: often, by going, they fill up a backpack, they acquire elements. Elements that, hereafter, stopping and staying they are able to assimilate and make their own.
And still, the most powerful tool for travelling remains the spirit, and the most capacious backpack will always be the mind.
At times, the necessity for a deeper reflection dictates the surrender and, even, the denial of the physical journey, which may prove distracting.
The mountain, for example. It doesn’t constitute of a mere geological structure, but the totality of the spatial, ideal and conceptual correlations determined by the human being in its juxtaposition with it. Reprocessed in such a way, it goes back to being living matter. One does not stroll around the mountain: it must be climbed.
And how does the human being climb the mountain? With the mind, naturally – that moves it.
And still, the peak remains steadfast.
What is still, doesn’t vibrate. (against Heisenberg?)
Culture is, above all, a revolutionary function, and as such it carried out historically dynamic procedures: and still, it is a kind of steadiness.
It’s a column, not an impression.
The ethnologist themselves are, ultimately, a scholar, and thus sedentary at heart: their journey can be described as a still one.
The living stone that doesn’t roll, in the still motion of research.

Marc Augé and Gianluca D’Incà Levis have already worked together in 2014, in the context of the Paesaggi contemporanei (Eng.: contemporary landscapes) format, in Forni di Sopra (Ud).
Qui the full transcript of the conversation back then, titled “The human is the territory” [ITA ONLY]
Here a video in which Augé talks about Dolomiti Contemporanee.
Augè is also part of the Jury of Two Calls for Vajont, International Contemporary Art Contes launched by DC in the Vajont area.
