Reopening the Monte Ricco Fort in Pieve di Cadore: DC’s role
A very important factor in the reflection that Dolomiti Contemporanee has been developing, ever since 2011, on the identity of the Contemporary Landscape, and on the – environmental, architectural, historical and cultural – Heritage’s destiny, is the indentification of the main sites/resources that mark the Dolomites’ landscape itself, contributing in its configuration.
The manner in which the regeneration, both cultural and functional, of the great, though abandoned and under-utilized, man-made sites is one of the pivotal themes typical of DC‘s research.
No site is essential in and of itself, as a mere object. The idea and practicality of its re-utilization, its usage and fruition re-design, are all an integral part of the Asset, exactly like the stones it’s made of, perhaps even more. If the site isn’t a creator of effective relations, then it’s just a crater.
The responsibility that falls on local players in the field of recovery and reactivation of such sites/resources, is thus to pinpoint the most appropriate and functional lines of action, coherent with the identity of the territory itself, always keeping sustainability and innovation in mind. It is necessary to be able to tap into the historical and cultural baggage that these sites represent and hold, effectively projecting them into contemporaneity.
As of this moment, there are around twenty sites in which DC applies ideas, platforms and reactivation projects.
Now, thanks to the conversation kickstarted by the The Foundation for the Study of Titian and the Cadore and the Pieve di Cadore municipality more than a year ago, Dolomiti Contemporanee is being involved in the re-launch of the Monte Ricco Fort (here more pictures and information).
The Fort represents an exceptional architectural, historical, and cultural emergency of the Cadore land, of the Belluno Province, of the Dolomitic region. The completion of its restoration is an important moment, as it is the launch of the structure itself.
The Fort is an extraordinary territorial resource, whose future identity must be determined with care and attention.
Thus, a significant collaboration between DC and two Foundations based in the Cadore area which will handle the site (Glasses Museum Foundation and Titian Studies Foundation), as well as the Cariverona Foundation, has been created.
All of these individuals and organizations demonstrate, right now, their faith in the contemporary and in innovative cultural methods and strategies.
DC‘s cultural and expository project for Monte Ricco involves around twenty young artists, already working on selected themes, and various, very important partners.
A collective exhibit of contemporary art, then, will be the first cultural content that people will be able to enjoy inside the Fort, from its origin.
The Fort and the exhibit will be inaugurated on May 20th 2017.
A construction site/lab, which will continue to change during the course of several weeks, will rely on an Artist’s Residency program that is being set up as we speak in Pieve di Cadore, birthplace of Titian.
And Titian himself, together with the Landscape will be the protagonist of this exhibit, which will lead the everlasting master of paint in direct contact with contemporaneity.

Here a few of the Fort’s spaces, in a video realized during surveys with the artists, which are still ongoing.
