Fuocoapaesaggio is the collective contemporary art exhibit, curated by Dolomiti Contemporanee, which will be inaugurated on Saturday, May the 20th, and that sets out to kickstart a new life for the Monte Ricco Fort in Pieve di Cadore (Belluno).
The Monte Ricco Fort is a stunning example of wartime architecture built on the tail end of the XIX century on the hill overlooking Pieve di Cadore (BL), birthplace of Titian.
Now, after a ten-year-long restoration process, carried out by the Municipality of Pieve di Cadore together with the Cariverona Foundation, the handling of the Fort will be overseen by two significant local authorities (The Foundation for the Study of Titian and the Cadore and the non-profit Eyeglasses Museum Foundation) and, finally, for the first time since its inception, it will be open to the public, with the exhibit Fuocoapaesaggio.
Several of the 21 artists involved in the exhibit have worked inside the Fort.
In Pieve di Cadore, thanks to the Municipality and the Titian Foundation, an Artist’s Residency has already been set up, finding its home in the House of the Mountain and Volunteerism: it’s from there that we move towards the Landscape, ready to ignite it. This is what Fuocoapaesaggio is about: igniting the Landscape, which is the living land of humans, a matrix that needs to be set ablaze to release its power, heat, smell, smoke and skies. In Italian, the word “fuoco” has two different meanings: “far fuoco” means “make a fire”, but “mettere a fuoco” means to “focus”, to “sharpen”, which implies looking closely, which in turn entails doing, rather than waiting.
Fuocoapaesaggio will also kickstart Tiziano Contemporaneo (Eng.: Contemporary Titian): a new project by DC, that begins here, and will then develop during the next few years. Why here? Titian was born in Pieve di Cadore. In his famous letter to Filippo di Spagna of October the 11th 1552, perhaps the first mention of the term “landscape” is found. Commenting it, Beroqui says that the painting (which is indeed a landscape) would be “set aflame in 1734″ in Madrid. Would you look at that. Fire is wise: if it weren’t Sun, it would be night. Says Heraclitus. Some of the artists of fuocoapaesaggio, then, will come and measure up to the supreme and terrific master.
