marc augé in dc’s “construction site”
Some months ago, when we were just getting started on the International Artistic Contest “Two Calls for Vajont”, now fully in motion, our ideas were already clear.
The intention wasn’t simply to realise an artwork, to impose its presence on the Vajont Dam.
The Contest isn’t an initiative.
It is an element, part of a general process, and coherent with it. This process is Dolomiti Contemporanee.
We could define Dolomiti Contemporanee as a project, a model, and even a critical outlook on the landscape, an action of rethought, re-evaluation, of the context. Cultural or functional rethought, to us there is no difference: no idea, as good as it might be, is a real idea if it doesn’t turn out to be applicable, if it cannot be realised.
It’s about reflecting, and acting, on the identity of the landscapes (everything is landscape, there aren’t any containers and contents), or rather, to interact with it.
It’s not about representing, but contributing to make, to built, identity.
Art doesn’t represent, it makes.
Trying to make identities for places, sites, contexts, landscapes, that have lost it, that are trapped in a state of criticality, of inertia.
How can an active, productive reflection on landscapes of the crisis, on the dormant resources, be carried out?
Involving in this process people with an active mind, whom are non-schematic, non-sectarian, non-defeatist, non-commiserative.
Open.
While we were in the process of building the structure of the Contest, we spoke with people with those characteristics, and we keep on doing it. Alfredo Jaar, Cristiana Collu, Franziska Nori, Angela Vettese, and the other jury members of Twocalls are like that, minds open beyond specific expertises. Marc Augé, Salvatore Settis, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Joseph Kusuth; we’ve begun to tell them about this idea as well, letting them in on this process, involving them in this reflection.
And thus, from the get go, the Contest ceased to be an event.
It never has been.
It has immediately become a construction site, a location, a gymnasium.
These and other people will now come in DC, in the process, nourishing it, supporting it, together with us. On August the 17th 2014, thanks to the Province of Udine, Marc Augé will be with DC in Forni di Sopra, to talk about contemporary landscapes, memory and presence, places and humanity, time without age.
We will shortly provide the programme for said occasion, that will see intervening other open non-sectary personalities, with eyes wide open, on things and on ideas.
And then, we will bring Augé to Casso, and Borca; all in all, a cruise.
