etienne chambaud/Contre – Dépouille
Contre – Dépouille, grand koudou skin, framework, 109 x 93 x 2,5 cm, 2012

This piece is part of a series called Contre – Dépouilles which consists of a set of animal skins placed on frameworks, so that the inner side is the one visible to the public. This choice makes it possible for the artist to unveil a series of stunning interventions, that come very close to a painting, although they conceal their real nature, making it impossible to recognize. Chambaud’s process can therefore be found halfway through the artistic approach and the artisanal practice, as confirmed by the titles of the pieces, which refer back to the prowess needed in the treatment of animal skin (from the art of hunting to taxidermy and tanning).
