the end of the border (of the mind)
the evening of the 5th of march, at 06.30 pm, the first ray of The End of the Border (of the mind), the itinerant performance by Stefano Cagol, supported by Dolomiti Contemporanee and by Pikene Pa Broen Barents Art Triennial, was launched over the Diga del Vajont (Vajont Dam), which is located near the New Venue of Casso.
The second ray was launched on 6th march to the Tofana di Rozes, one of the most important mountain in Cortina d’Ampezzo, with the snow falling down.
Dolomiti Contempornee took in charge the management of the new Venue of Casso a few months ago. The building (the ex-school of the town), damaged in 1963 with the Vajont Tragedy, was closed since then. Dolomiti Contemporanee is working to turn this space into a Center for Contemporary Mountain Culture, able to give new impulses to the territory and product new images for/from it.
The space is becoming a platform for excange, likely to activate partnerships with other project in Italy and all over the world.
The Diga del Vajont is a mute and static object. Stefano Cagol’s ray overstepped the Dam, symbolically showing how to surpass what is closed. The Dam didn’t fell down, pushed by the wave provoked by the landslide of Mount Toc. It stayed there motionless while the towns nearby were cancelled by the passage of the wave. The dam is like a cultural block, apparently impossible to overcome. It is necessary to change the cultural image of this place, and art can be a way to achieve this target.Cagol’s performance was an attempt to change the cultural image of this “monument”. The dam is no longer an hydraulic work but a cultural barrier. The light of the artist’s ray overtook this barrier physically and metaphorically.
100.000 people saw this event through the media. Many partners supported this project that will lead the artist over the north pole, at the barents’ Triennial.
The van (gruppo Sina), with the headlamp and the power pack (CMI Sedico) was placed in front of the dam. March 5, at 06.00 pm the light turned on in the presence of reporters, camera crews, photographers, some mayors of the territory and many curious people. Some drones (ACA comnmunication) were there to film the event from above. The strong and silent light was also seen in Longarone, many kilometers away, on the other side of the Dam.
The day after, at 06.30 pm, a second reay beamed the Tofana di Rozes in Cortina d’Ampezzo. it was snowy and there was a lot of fog, but the ray drilled the white sky and the light reflected on the snowflakes, empowering the illumination effect.
The Stefano Cagol went on his way to the north pole, lighting up other objects, crossing many other phisical and mental borders.
